50 Year Anniversary Plans

Over the winter I spent a considerable amount of time meeting long time members of our Club to gather information, stories, and photos about the fifty year history. This effort has been with the assistance of Jean Harris, Bonnie and Dick Steiner, Keith Driver, and Ross and Muriel Cheriton. Our plan is to print a fun and informative full colour fifty year history book which will be provided to all members this summer. We should have it ready for the Commodore’s Sailpast reception. Besides the usual Sailpast activities we will have an evening party as well. So mark it on your calendar as a once in 50 years, must attend event!

Sailweek, a unique Wabamun event!

Sailweek.pdf

As Water Rat said in “The Wind and the Willows”, “There is simply nothing as much fun as messing about in boats.”

Jul 20, 2009 - For five glorious summer days in mid July, the Wabamun Sailing Club messes about in boats. With sailing lessons for kids, fun sailing races everyday, a women in wind program and on the water coaching by Alberta’s professional sailing coach, there’s plenty of messing! And it’s usually at the peak of summer with warm days and warm water. It translates into barefoot, bathing suit and T-shirt sailing all week.

To top it all off, the club hosts social evenings every night of the week. It’s a family focus so the kids can have lots of fun. Traditional events are: the Wednesday night BBQ and Wabamun Olympics races (sack, three legged, running, egg and spoon), the Wiener Roast and Banana Boat night, Capture the Flag night, Scavenger Hunt night, and a Campfire Sing Song night. Other popular events are the bocce ball competition, Mae’s daily afternoon ice cream and a potluck pasta supper night. Toss in lots of swimming, camping and ad hoc kids’ games of ultimate frisbee, soccer or volleyball and it’s a kid heaven.

With fences on all sides of the waterfront property, it’s a secure place for kids to run and play while the parent’s can kick back and really unwind on shore or on the water.

It’s all organized by and run by volunteer club members. Usually everyone pitches in and gets involved. It’s what keeps the community spirit alive and dramatically lowers the costs. It’s an unbelievable bargain in our little corner of paradise!

It’s unique. It’s special. It’s a wonderful week.

And it’s only at the Wabamun Sailing Club. Come and experience Sailweek for yourself!

Clubhouse Renovation - Work Party #2 Update.

We had another hard working weekend and made excellent progress. It was a tremendous team effort. All of the guys are to be commended for a great job well done! All of the pine is now installed on the walls and ceiling. We also removed the temporary platform over the stairwell. We had ten club members on Saturday and nine on Sunday.

Mar 29, 2009 - Other than the drywall needed on the upper walls of the stairwell, we are into finishing. Things like drywall sanding and painting, baseboards, light fixtures, ceiling fans, projector set up,and column covers and finally floor painting.

We no longer need large work parties but need people with finishing skills. We have returned the major components of scaffolding but have kept one set for the finishing.

Attached are a few photos of our work. Notice we put the blue paint on the north wall and it looks fabulous!

Clubhouse Work Party #2 - March 28-29th!

The second weekend for the Clubhouse Loft Renovation work party will be:

March 28-29th!

A hearty group of volunteers (about 20 Saturday and 12 Sunday) got an excellent start on the renos on the March 14-15th weekend, completing about 60% of the wall surfaces wall surfaces and nearly 30% of the ceiling sections. There's still lots of work remaining, but we got a great start. During this second weekend, with a similar group of volunteers, we should hope to complete the ceiling and wall work and we should be able to dismantle the temporary platform above the stairs, leaving only the finishing work for a later date.

We have left the scafolding in place and we are ready to pick up where we left off.

Mar 28, 2009 - Please confirm if you will be able to help out, and in what capacity (work party or lunch crew) by sending an email to Russel (using the address on this message) before March 24th. If you can't make the 28-29th weekend, but might be able to help do the finishing work or work on the Mar 21 weekend, please let me know so I can help coordinate tools and work.

Thanks so much everyone! Looking forward to seeing you there!

Clubhouse Work Party has arrived - March 14-15th!

The dates for the Clubhouse Loft Renovation work party are confirmed:

March 14-15th!

We will need 10 people in the work party for each day of the weekend. As well, we would be most appreciative of volunteer(s) to organize and prepare some lunches for the crew. This weekend should see most of the heavy work complete, saving some finishing trim, electrical face plates and painting for just a few people at a later date (possibly the 28-29th of March).
